Performance Testing
______________________________________________________

The dictionary defines "science" as a "a branch of the study concerned with observations and classifications of facts, and especially the establishment of verifiable general laws."

As was mentioned, Performance Testing is NOT compulsory, reason for this being, is simple.  If you force someone to do performance testing who does not want to do it, they take shortcuts and you end up with a lot of inaccurate data.  We prefer less data, but highly accurate.

For those who would like to do Performance Testing your options are as follows:

1.  Weight of cow and calf at birth ( must be done within 3 days of birth)
2.  Weight of cow and calf at weaning (151 - 270 days). Maximum age variation of a group, no larger than 100 days.  The larger the group of animals you weigh the more accurate your data.  Try to
keep your groups larger than 10 animals when weighing.
3.  Weigh calf at 12 months (271 - 450 days) Maximum age variation within a group is 100 days.  *Optional
4.  Weigh calf at 18 months (451 - 634 days) Maximum age variation within a group is 100 days. *Optional

Although point 3 and 4 is optional it is highly advisable to do at least one, and preferably the 18 month weight.

Step by Step:

You will need a work book to capture all your field data before loading it onto your computer.

1.  You will have to make a mating list to describe type of mating, bull and cow with date in and date out

Cow ID Bull ID Type of Mating Follow up Bull Date in / Date out
XYZ 08-225 XYZ 95-21 AI - 16-12-2009 XYZ 05 - 200 20-12-2009 / 25-04-2010
XYZ 08-228 ABC 02-24 Natural   16-12-2009 / 25-04-2010
XYZ 08-229 ABC 05-507 AI - 16-12-2009 XYZ 05 - 200 20-12-2009 / 25-4-2010

At the end of your mating season, record all data onto your computer program (ex. Beefpro) or if you don’t run a program, onto Logix.

2.  When your cows start calving, you will need to record their date of birth etc in your field work book.

Calf no.
Birth weight
Date of Birth Sex Mother
Mother weight at calving
Sire Wean Weigh of Calf Weight of Cow at Weaning of Calf Remarks
9031 39 19-9-2009 B ABC 4057 (490) XYZ 6015 186 kg 458 kg Polled
9032 25 21-9-2009 F XYZ 6002 (350) XYZ 6010 235 kg 372 kg
9033 23 22-9-2009 F ABC 5038 (369) ABC 3019 240 kg 380 kg Undershot jaw

3.  After the calf has been born it HAS TO BE IDENTIFIED via a Tag.  The information that MUST be on the tag is your HDM (ex. ABC) and the calves ID (ex 09-003).  So its ID will read ABC 09-003
meaning it was the third calf born in YOUR herd in the year of 2009.

*NB. Remember to send in birth notifications though yourBeefpro, logix or by hand to studbook within 90 days OR YOU WILL RECEIVE A PENALTY per late entry.

4.  If you plan to do performance testing, calves should be weighed (not neccecaraly weaned) between the age of 151 days and 270 days.  After weights of cow and calf are taken, it should be
sent to studbook through your recording program, logix or by hand. (For more information, attend our Jnr. And Snr. Courses)

5.  All calves born should not be branded later than 12 months of age.  Brand in the following manner.

AB – Your herd definition mark

153 – the 153rd calf born in your herd

09- Year 2009

NB. According with the Constitution, no other brand marks should be on pure (SP) animals except those mensioned above, otherwise they will be cancelled.

Tagging:

Tagging takes place as follows:

You may put any other additional information on your tag/ticket but main requirements are your herd designation mark and the animal ID.

PLEASE NOTE:

An animal’s ID consists of a herd designation mark (ex. XYZ) and a year and sequence number (ex 7-10). Animals ID ALWAYS stays the same, regardless of when he or she is purchased. Once an animal receives an ID number (ex. XYZ 7010) it will remain that for the rest of its life time even when sold and purchased a multiple times.
